Lo scorso 16 Ottobre l’esclusivo “Sognametal European Tour” è passato dal Circolo Colony di Brescia. La data era assolutamente imperdibile per i redattori di Pagan Storm Webzine, e l’occasione di intervistare Hvàll, bassista e compositore dei Vreid (nonché dei compianti Windir e ancor prima degli Ulcus), troppo ghiotta per potersela lasciar sfuggire.
Così il passato, il presente ed il futuro delle band sono stati discussi in questa intervista…

Q- First of all: how are you and how is the tour going so far?
A- Hváll: Well, we are good, we are touring for a week soon and it is a good tour so far, we did Rome for the first time ever yesterday and it was a great show… Way too hot but, you know, we are having a good time on tour!
Q- So you appreciated Rome, do you like the city also from the historical point of view?
A- Hváll: Yeah, absolutely! Of course, I think that it is one of the most amazing cities in the world and I have also been there before as a tourist on vacation and visited all the touristic places, and yesterday I brought all of the guys to the Colosseum before the show and stuff like that… So, good time! I would like to spend more time there…
Q- Well, so let’s focus on the music: which is the next step of Vreid? I mean, may the collaboration with Valfar’s brother [Vegard Bakken] continue on a full-length album, or maybe with some side-projects or stuff like that?
A- Hváll: Oh, maybe, but you know Vegard is not really a musician, so of course it would be great but I do not see him really going into albums or something like that… But if we would want to do it, maybe sometimes, it would be amazing! He especially does this shows in the honour of Windir… And later on, now the next move [for Vreid] is to start actively working on a new album. We have recorded something early this year and we will release [it] the next autumn. So we will continue what we have done with Vreid. I think it also might be the most extreme album we have ever done, the most Black Metal album we have ever done and so fast…
Q- That’s great…
A- Hváll: Yeah, I also think that the year we have had now, not having regular shows and focusing on these [Sognametal Tour’s special shows]… We need to take some time off, but we have discovered a lot of our own history… So, who knows! Who knows how the next album turns up, but so far it sounds quite extreme.
Q- And that’s great because we like extreme music [laughs]… Why did you choose not to write any lyric in Norwegian language in the last two albums? Will you ever use it in the next albums again?
A- Hváll: Never. [Laughs] Yes, actually the whole next album will be completely in Norwegian again! So, it is one of those things that sometimes are mixed-up in an album [“Pitch Black Brigade” (2006)], sometimes they’re all in Norwegian [“I Krig” (2007)]. For the last albums we felt natural to do it completely in English for the topics we touched and stuff, and this time we started into looking in some of the lyrics. I wrote a couple of lines in Norwegian and I decided I wanted to do the whole album in Norwegian again. So, we do not put any limit and we do not decide “we must do this and that”. We follow our feelings when we start an album and so the next album will be in Norwegian… Sognamål [native dialect of the band]!
Q- So what we can expect musical-wise from the next album? You already told us that it will be maybe the most extreme one in Vreid’s history, so you have in a certain sense already answered our next question, but can you tell us something more about this?
A- Hváll: Yes, we have a lot of ideas for the next album, and we have four or five songs -more or less- finished, and we do not know how the album will turn out, but it sounds a lot more like the 90’s stuff. It is a bit faster and also darker and actually has more keyboards than ever and layers, so it will be very atmospheric in a dark, very dark way. So, whereas the last album with Vreid we already had some elements of those, but you also find songs that are more kind of 70’s Rock and Progressive kind of style, with the new album we feel… So far, at least, my impression is that there are a lot of links with the Black Metal from the 90s…
Q- …maybe something connected with early Burzum stuff, if I got it…
A- Hváll: Yes, Burzum is definitively always an inspiration… Along with Emperor and Darkthrone. Even if you find it easy, you know, building songs around that [personal inspirations] it is something that we have not tried for quite a while. We are always like to change in each album, but the thing is that you do not necessarily have to “step ahead”, writing something “new”. Sometimes you have to do that, but all the times that you go back to your past, you can find something that influences you that way. But you know, it is still in the process, we do not know how it will turn up!
Q- Yeah, and you have answered another upcoming question [laughs] so we can directly go to the next one…
A- Hváll: Yeah, I know all of the questions [laughs]!
Q- Well, this is a personal question, because I noticed some changes in the vocal style of Sture in particular in the last album, do you agree? And what we can expect in the future under this point of view?
A- Hváll: Yes, we do not know how exactly the vocals will be in the next album, but I agree, quite a lot of different techniques and changing… With the last album [“Welcome Farewell” (2013)], we recorded everything once, it was more like a “live” recording…
Q- …First take?
A- Hváll: Yeah, and in the recording sessions we did not use any effect, whereas in the previous album [“V” (2011)] was more like studio recording and built with layers, so… We wanted to have a “raw thing” that happens directly from the live session recording too. It was trying something different and I was really happy about that, but who knows? I do not actually know how to do it in the next album, this is one of the things that are interesting in studio, to see where you end.
Q- Which are the bands that have influenced you the most, and the others in the band, for your music and in your career so far? And is there any recent band nowadays that you personally appreciate?
A- Hváll: We have a lot of different tastes within the band, but what is typical for this band is that we listen to all kind of music, you know, especially when you sit on the tour-bus after shows, having some drinks… You do not listen to that Metal stuff actually, you know [laughs]. So, more different kinds of music! Pop music, we like a lot of hit songs. One of those songs that everyone loves on this tour-bus is “Moonlight Shadow” by Mike Oldfield [laughs]. Really a pop song [laughs]! You know, that was actually I think one of mine and Valfar’s favourite songs, and I guess inspired him a lot. But more in the aspect we do, of course, it starts with Thrash Area from Kreator, Metallica, Slayer… You know, all those bands. And then came the Black Metal wave, that inspired us a lot, and [the band] Death has been extremely important for Vreid. But also a lot of 70s stuff, actually like Alice Cooper, Bowie, The Stooges and stuff like that. You know, these are albums that you never grow tired of! Listening to them over and over and over again.
With newer bands… I think there are many great bands. For example from Norway one of my favourite is called Nekromantheon. It is a kind of 80’s Black/Thrash Metal, but there are also new great Black Metal bands like Vemod. This is one of those bands that I really follow these days.
Q- Thank you. An irrelevant final question, but maybe we have to ask Sture about this [Hváll laughs]. In a video you posted, shot during a North American tour, I guess it was in 2007 or 2009, Sture was wearing an amazing kid yellow pyjama with monkeys on it [laughs again]. Truly fantastic. We wanted to know if he brought it with him also during this tour…
A- Hváll: Yes! [Laughs] He always sleeps in this suit! And you know, we were out, it was 2009 our first U.S. tour and Ese, our former guitarist, were out to buy some presents for a kid back home, and then we found this HUGE kid’s pyjama and we know we had to give this to Sture. And it was too small, but we put him into this and he started to move along and twisting and put on some dances… I think he did a great performance! We should have a live show sometimes [laughs]!
Q- [Laughing] So, we are at the end of the interview. Do you want to tell something freely to our listeners or to the Italian audience as well?
A- Hváll: Well, we appreciate all you great support. I think Italy is one of the most loyal fanbase and we know that with Vreid has been built, through the years, and with Windir they have a special relationship. When we played yesterday when people were singing along to the tunes and singing the melodies it was a fantastic experience, you know. We have played in Italy with Vreid before, but I think especially for the other guys, like Righ on the keyboards and Espen from Mistur that is doing guitars for us [on this tour] as well and especially Vegard… It is quite emotional to see how they dedicate and how loyal are the fans in Italy…
Q- …I can guess.
A- Hváll: So, Italy! We always appreciated you, even our guitarist Strom got married last year and he had his wedding in Italy, so we actually love this country!

Q- Ciao Hváll, rompiamo il ghiaccio: come va e come sta andando il tour?
A- Hváll: Bene! Alla grande, siamo in tour da quasi una settimana ormai e finora è stato un buon tour, ieri abbiamo tenuto il nostro primo concerto di sempre a Roma ed è stato davvero un grande show… Caldissimo! Ma, davvero, ci stiamo divertendo un sacco in tour!
Q- Avete apprezzato Roma, quindi! Vi piace la città anche sotto l’aspetto storico e culturale?
A- Hváll: Sì, assolutamente! Sicuro, penso che Roma sia una delle più straordinarie città al mondo e ci sono anche stato diverse volte come turista in vacanza. Ieri ho portato i ragazzi della band al Colosseo prima dello show e negli altri posti… Quindi gran bei momenti! Vorrei poter passare più tempo qui…
Q- Bene, concentriamoci subito sulla musica: qual è invece il prossimo passo per i Vreid? Ad esempio, la collaborazione con il fratello di Valfar [Vegard Bakken, -ndr] potrà continuare su un album in studio, o magari con qualche side-project o cose simili?
A- Hváll: Oh, può darsi… Ma sai, Vegard non è propriamente un musicista, quindi sicuramente sarebbe grandioso ma non lo vedo realmente propenso a inserirsi in cose come album, studio, eccetera… Ma se volessimo fare qualcosa del genere in futuro, magari occasionalmente, sarebbe fantastico! Lui partecipa a questi show principalmente in onore dei Windir. Invece, ora, il prossimo passo [per i Vreid] è quello di iniziare a lavorare attivamente al nuovo album… Abbiamo già registrato qualcosa all’inizio di quest’anno e sarà rilasciato il prossimo autunno, quindi continueremo con il lavoro fatto finora con i Vreid. Tra l’altro, penso che sarà anche il lavoro più estremo mai fatto dai Vreid, il disco più Black Metal della nostra carriera… Davvero veloce…
Q- Questo è un buon inizio…
A- Hváll: Sì! Penso che l’anno che abbiamo appena passato, senza fare show regolari e focalizzandoci solo su questi [gli show speciali del Sognametal Tour]… Intendo, abbiamo bisogno di prenderci un attimo di stacco da tutto ciò, ma abbiamo anche riscoperto un sacco della nostra storia e del nostro passato… Quindi, chi lo sa! Chi lo sa come il prossimo album potrebbe venir fuori, ti posso dire che finora suona parecchio estremo.
Q- Direi che è fantastico. Noi amiamo la musica estrema, quindi… [ridiamo, -ndr] Come mai avete scelto di non scrivere alcun testo in norvegese negli ultimi due album? Userete ancora la vostra lingua nei prossimi dischi?
A- Hváll: Mai. [Ride, -ndr] Sì, in realtà tornerà di nuovo nel prossimo album e sarà completamente in norvegese! Sai, è una di quelle cose che ogni tanto è mescolata negli album [“Pitch Black Brigade” (2006)], mentre qualche volta è completamente in norvegese [“I Krig” (2007)]. Nell’ultimo album abbiamo sentito naturale usare solo l’inglese, per via degli argomenti trattati, e questa volta invece siamo partiti dai testi. Ho buttato giù un paio di versi in norvegese e ho deciso che volevo fare di nuovo un album unicamente in norvegese. Quindi in realtà non ci poniamo alcun limite e non decidiamo di “fare questo o quello”, seguiamo i nostri sentimenti quando iniziamo un album. Ed ecco che il prossimo album sarà totalmente in norvegese di nuovo. Sognamål [dialetto nativo della band]!
Q- Quindi cosa possiamo aspettarci musicalmente dal prossimo disco? Ci hai già detto che sarà probabilmente il più estremo della carriera dei Vreid, quindi in un certo senso hai già risposto anche alla nostra prossima domanda, ma puoi dirci qualcosa in più sotto questo punto di vista?
A- Hváll: Certo, abbiamo un sacco di idee per quanto riguarda il prossimo album. Abbiamo anche più o meno già quattro o cinque pezzi completati finora, e anche se non sappiamo ancora come alla fine il disco uscirà, posso dirti che suonerà molto 90s… E’ più veloce, ma anche più oscuro e ha anche più tastiere e sovraincisioni. Quindi sarà anche molto atmosferico ma in un modo veramente oscuro. Nonostante anche nell’ultimo album abbiamo avuto elementi simili, si potranno trovare anche pezzi che ricordano più un certo tipo di Rock e Progressive anni ’70. Con il nuovo album sentiamo che… O almeno, la mia impressone è che ci siano veramente molti richiami e legami con il Black Metal dei primi anni ‘90…
Q- …Atmosfera e anni ’90. Qualcosa che richiami, ad esempio, i primi lavori di Burzum…
A- Hváll: Assolutamente. Burzum è sempre fonte di grande ispirazione… Insieme ad Emperor e Darkthrone. Anche se può sembrare semplice e banale, sai, costruirci canzoni attorno [si riferisce alle ispirazioni personali, -ndr] è qualcosa che non proviamo più a fare davvero da molto. Siamo sempre propensi e portati a cambiare album dopo album, ma il fatto è che non è per forza necessario “andare avanti”, scrivendo qualcosa di “nuovo”. Qualche volta è necessario che tu lo faccia, ma ogni volta che ti guardi indietro e osservi il tuo passato, puoi trovare qualcosa che ti re-influenza in questo modo ed in questa nuova direzione. Ma sai, l’album è ancora in scrittura, non sappiamo comunque esattamente come uscirà alla fine!
Q- Ecco, hai già risposto ad un’altra delle domande che sarebbero arrivate. Quindi passiamo direttamente alla prossima…
A- Hváll: Sicuro, conosco tutte le domande! [Ridiamo]
Q- Questa è una domanda personale, perché ho notato alcuni cambiamenti nello stile vocale impiegato da Sture nell’ultimo album. Sei d’accordo? E cosa possiamo aspettarci in futuro sotto questo punto di vista?
A- Hváll: Sì, è vero. Non sappiamo ancora con esattezza come saranno le parti vocali sul prossimo album, ma sono d’accordo, parecchie differenze, differenti tecniche vocali utilizzate e cambiamenti in generale… Per l’ultimo album [“Welcome Farewell” (2013)] abbiamo registrato tutto una sola volta, è stato più simile ad una registrazione “dal vivo”…
Q- …Buona la prima?
A- Hváll: Sì, e nelle sessioni di registrazione non usammo alcun effetto, mentre nell’album precedente [“V” (2011)] fu più simile ad una vera e propria registrazione in studio, costruita con sovraincisioni eccetera, quindi… Volevamo avere insomma una “cosa più grezza” che uscisse direttamente dalle sessioni di registrazione anche al primo colpo. E’ stato provare qualcosa di nuovo e sono molto soddisfatto dell’effetto che abbiamo ottenuto, ma chi lo sa? Non sappiamo ancora come gestire questo particolare nel prossimo album, questa è una di quelle cose interessanti da vedere in studio. Vedere da dove parti e invece dove poi arrivi.
Q- Quali sono le band che maggiormente ti hanno influenzato e che sai abbiano influenzato gli altri ragazzi della band, nella vostra musica e nella vostra carriera finora? C’è qualche band, tra le proposte più recenti, che particolarmente apprezzi?
A- Hváll: Guarda, abbiamo davvero gusti musicali molto diversi tra noi all’interno della band, ma quello che è tipico nel nostro gruppo è che in sostanza ascoltiamo ogni tipo di musica. Sai, specialmente quando sei seduto nel tour-bus dopo gli show, bevendo qualcosa… Non hai davvero voglia di ascoltare dell’altro Metal [ride]. Quindi, diversi tipi di musica! Musica pop, apprezziamo un sacco di hit, una di quelle che ognuno di noi ama su questo tour-bus è sicuramente “Moonlight Shadow” di Mike Oldfield [ride di nuovo]… Una canzone veramente pop! Sapete… Tra l’altro fu davvero una delle mie canzoni preferite anni fa, ed anche di Valfar. Immagino lo abbia ispirato davvero molto. Ma più nell’aspetto che ci riguarda ora, sicuramente, iniziamo con l’area Thrash: dai Kreator, a Metallica e Slayer… Insomma, tutte quelle band… E quindi passiamo all’ondata Black Metal, che sicuramente ci ha ispirato moltissimo, e i Death sono stati davvero fondamentali per la band. Anche un sacco di roba anni ‘70 come Alice Cooper, Bowie, gli Stooges e cose simili. Lo sai, sono album di cui non ti stanchi proprio mai. Li ascolti, li riascolti e li risenti ancora all’infinito.
Per quanto riguarda invece le band più recenti, io penso che ce ne siano davvero moltissime valide in giro. Ad esempio, dalla Norvegia una delle mie preferite si chiama Nekromantheon. Fanno una sorta di Black/Thrash Metal molto anni ’80. Ma anche tra le band Black Metal… Ad esempio i Vemod. Loro sono una di quelle band che davvero seguo, oggi come oggi.
Q- Benissimo… Siamo giunti all’ultima domanda. Qualcosa di irrilevante che probabilmente dovremmo chiedere direttamente a Sture [Hváll ride subito, -ndr]. In uno dei vostri video-report dall’ultimo nordamericano, era il 2007 o il 2009, Sture vestiva un fantastico pigiama da bambino giallo. Aveva su delle scimmie… Davvero fantastico [altre risate -ndr]. Volevamo sapere se lo ha portato con se anche durante questo tour…
A- Hváll: Certo [ride]! Lui dorme sempre e solo in quella tutina! Sai, eravamo via, era il 2009 durante il nostro primo tour statunitense ed Ese, il nostro vecchio chitarrista, doveva comprare qualche pensierino per un bambino a casa. Quindi trovammo questi ENORMI pigiama da bimbo [altre risate] e in quel momento abbiamo realizzato che doveva indossarlo Sture. Era ovviamente troppo piccolo, ma glielo facemmo indossare ugualmente. Ha subito iniziato a muoversi in modo buffo imbastendo anche qualche bizzarro balletto… Penso abbia davvero tirato su una grande performance! Ad ogni modo, dovremmo fare qualche live show del genere ogni tanto!
Q- [Ridendo] Fantastico! Siamo giunti al termine dell’intervista… Vuoi dire qualcosa ai nostri lettori o al pubblico italiano in generale? Se lo desideri, ne hai la possibilità.
A- Hváll: Sì! Apprezziamo davvero molto il vostro supporto, penso che l’Italia sia una delle fanbase più solide e leali e conosciamo il rapporto che si è creato con i Vreid in questi anni, e vediamo che con i Windir avete una relazione speciale. Quando abbiamo suonato ieri, quando le persone intonavano le melodie e cantavano le strofe… È stata un’esperienza fantastica sai? Abbiamo già suonato in Italia con i Vreid prima d’ora, ma parlo soprattutto a nome degli altri ragazzi, come Righ alle tastiere ed Espen dei Mistur che sta suonando delle parti di chitarra per noi durante questo tour. Ma specialmente per Vegard. È davvero emozionante vedere la dedizione e tutta la lealtà che hanno i fan nei nostri confronti qui…
Q- …Posso immaginare.
A- Hváll: Quindi, Italia! Abbiamo sempre apprezzato molto il vostro paese… Perfino il nostro chitarrista Strom, che si è sposato l’anno scorso, ha celebrato il suo matrimonio qui in Italia! Amiamo davvero molto il vostro paese.

A- Hváll: Grazie a voi!
