Pagan Storm intervista i Progenie Terrestre Pura

Questi benefici dove porteranno? Dove andremo a finire?

Noioso.

Q- Ciononostante, ora vorrei farvi soffermare sulle sole influenze etniche.

Per me è fantastico.

A- Davide: Non volontariamente.

L’artwork riservato a “[.Deus.

Comunque, io nasco come chitarrista.

Grazie ancora a tutti.
Stay | in | Space.

Fabrizio Sanna, Davide Colladon e Emanuele Prandoni

[EN]

Q- Welcome to Pagan Storm Webzine, guys. First of all, we sincerely have to greet you for the excellent work done with “OltreLuna”, which is pretty amazing. We’d like to start speaking about the concept behind the record; I’d say that the birth of the project with the eponymous track – and so to speak the debut album, was rather focused on the tight dualistic relationship between Man and Machine. Now I feel [without the booklet at the time of the interview, tho –EdN] that this new record brings new themes and even a diametrically different approach or cut to the subject. Is there a proper concept or something similar behind “OltreLuna”?

A- Emanuele: As you rightly said, the main theme in q[T]p is the duality, the relationship between men and machines in a supposed future where the hybridation of the two “species” finds its utmost form of evolution, but in “OltreLuna”, as the actual music can bring you to guess, we made a step back for a while.
The Man has always looked at the sky with curiosity and devotion, following his beliefs and habits according to what was written in the stars, setting there desires, idols or divinities. The opener-track, the “[.Pianeta.Zero.]” [“Zero Planet” in Italian, -EdN] is the starting point, the opposite of “[.Proxima:B.]” where the awarness has been achieved and the physical separation from the Mother Planet has been eventually accomplished, triggered in the beginning by the research for the divine.
In pretty much every lyric of this record is noticeable a human feeling still (mentally) tied to the Earth. For example, about the first track still, I tried to include a primitive and tribal scape in a sci-fi context , taking inspiration from the ritual of the aboriginal people in the tribes of Australia today still, in which every member has to fulfill its solitary journey into the desert in the night, that has to be made all alone and with the only light of the stars guiding him, in order to find the innerself and to deserve a place in this World.
The journey, the solitary travel itself, of the man who is chasing God loosing the traces more and more while the starting point gets smaller and smaller behind him, is the actual metaphor behind the first three steps of the record, before getting back to the more usual themes q[T]p deals with.
The songs, not actually linked with a prior concept, have nonetheless in common the travel, the search for something: the longing for the pioneering discovery made by those who’ll be identified with the “Progenie Terrestre Pura”, in a time in which the search for God, for the Divine, does not happen in a spiritual way anymore, but thanks to mathematical calculations instead.
Personally, I like to consider “OltreLuna” as a sort of prequel of “U.M.A.”, in that sense
.

Davide: At the duality Men-Machines and at the third factor (the soul/divine theme, now even more remarked in my opinion) yet to be found in “U.M.A.”, we added in “OltreLuna” the voyage theme: from the Point A (so to say the first track), to the Point B (so to say the last one), and with all the other songs amplifying the vision and leading onto this journey, to say it roughly.
“U.M.A.”, as someone also said, it was a colder record (and that was deliberated) since we sang -among the other things- about this hyper-technological future which led us to this enormous question about our race, as humans: to remain the “Progenie Terrestre Pura” , as to say the “Pure Sons Of The Earth”, or to hybridize with the machines, to mechanize ourselves loosing or purity, trying to deceive Death, fooling the Divine. It’s already began, tho: artificial implants, pace makers, various valves… All of these benefits where actually lead us? Where will we go with that? It’s not a matter of good or evil, rather one of to be or not to be, as said by the previous singer Nex[1], author of all the lyrics in “U.M.A.”.
A brilliant and interesting vision about that is given by Asimov in its novel “The Bicentennial Man”, from which the homonymous film has also been cut.
“OltreLuna” is an harsher, sanguineous, warm record to put it like this, and I think it’s clear even from the sound, as the main theme is another one: from the Earth of the primitive men, where the utmost form of technology was given bythe human eyes scanning the stars as guides, admiring them, divining them, coming in the end to the very conquer of a new Planet. Of course, in the whole record the span of time is wide indeed, and each of these five tracks is an own step in the journey, where we can face up one of the recurrent themes in this adventure, comparing the men with themselves and with everything both surrounding and above them
.

Q- By the way, I don’t think that the conquering of a new planet is the actual purpose of the journey: I found “OltreLuna” really more cohesive and solid, under this perspective, compared to “U.M.A.”.
In your debut there where a sequence of great songs for sure, but here concept or not, we can find a proper narrative thread sparkling from the music itself, starting with more terrestrial, physical and warm atmospheres, kicking off the travel as Humans, then taking off and ending with a constant journey stretched towards the “Oltre” [“Over” in Italian, -EdN], trying to become “Other” – something else. What does the Man become, after leaving the Pianeta Zero [“Zero Planet” in Italian, -EdN] and approaching to the point B?

A- Davide: It’s the end of the journey in “OltreLuna” and the beginning of another one, for sure. To be honest, inner travels like this never end to say the least. Let’s say that, when I realized what was coming out of what would have become the first track of the record, I also found very clear what we should have said in the lyrics of the album. Then, the whole talk about the journey theme was born exchanging our views, opinions and lyrics. A couple of them are even written by me, for the very first time indeed. The title of the record was made by me too. Maybe, this partial taking part to the writing of the lyrics by myself, has contributed to realize the greater cohesion you’re hearing. Anyway, the research of the “over”, pushing further the self, the great metaphor which is the travel in the end… All of them are valid interpretations. I really like when the lyrics and our imagery bring people to think, to ponder and to consider all of this: I think it’s a huge goal for the Artist, maybe one of the greatest.
I think the Man, in the end, is always the same. The one of the Pianeta Zero and the one of Proxima B don’t differ each others in matter, but they see the reality in a truly different way (and to speak like this, I don’t necessarily assume the Man of the future as better than the one of the past).
All in all, I don’t see a real difference for the Man itself as a matter in my stories: but I do enjoy to include him in several different time-contexts and to see which shades he gets.
And then I’m even more curious to see which ones he gets for the others [the listeners, -EdN].

Emanuele: There’s a gradual mutation in the lyrics, that goes hand in hand with the music of the songs; when the tribal and ethnic sounds begin to fade, Man’s marked adhesion to his spheres of consciousness starts to disappear too, in order to open himself to what in the end is nothing else that a new beginning.
“[.Proxima:B.]” is a vehicle, a passage that once overcome and known lead to new riddles and enigmas, to everything concerning the supernormal. The imagery deals with the mutation, of course, but in a perspective of “Man-Other”, not of a general “Other” per sé. In this case, the traveller of space and time finally discover “the invisible” as a real part of the material dimension, beginning to perceive it and taking control over the astral and mental plane, getting to the last step of the human evolution, becoming in this way aware of his Self in every and each plane of existence.
I think that the cohesion that the record conveys, is in part due to the fact that there was a confrontation between us and an exchange of ideas about how to integrate new elements in a project that, like it or not, has left the mark for another kind of sound – that very likely is never going to repeat again in the future. Not in that given key, at least
.

Q- And speaking about this progressive mutation of the lyrics through the record – like Emanuele said, depicting Man’s gradual detachment from the previous spheres of consciousness, it seems to me that as well as I guessed in the review, the greater explicit focus on the electronic parts sparkling with growing intensity from the second half of the record, as the record develops, it’s not accidental at all…

A- Emanuele: Yes, exactly, of course. It’s not accidental that the two elements go hand in hand in the record. Everything had to fit perfectly and needed to have a logic thread, especially to us, helping in order to identify ourselves the most, above all during the recordings – faced in a way in which the Man was always able to have the control on the Machines and not vice versa. That was important because the very greater part of the synthesizers used on “OltreLuna” is played by hand and not programmed.
It makes me really happy that you’ve noticed all of this little details. It’s the product of a truly careful and mindful listening, even a bit unusual and rare on these days.

Fabrizio: I think we would have never been able to create the right atmosphere for this record if we didn’t have felt and lived ourselves it first, with the proper instruments in our hands. The human sensibility, mixed with the programming, made us able to give the album and the songs a lot of nuances in order to exalt and enhance their dimensions. For what is concerning the elecronics, in some parts, the melody, the tone and the filters are managed by hand, analogically, to get the most instinctive and instinctual moments; in other parts, the melody is always played by hand, but the filters are programmed digitally in order to get the most violent and impactful situations. Everything is mixed with samples and virtual instruments reminding and sprouting the atmospheres and the meanings of the lyrics.
Every solution has been used as a direct function of the message the track wants to convey in that very moment. All in all, the rising intensity of the electronics in the record, although it is studied and sought, has came out very naturally.

Q- Next to the new warm cut of the ethnic and tribal solutions explored in “OltreLuna”, we have a different, overall more aggressive direction, lead above all by more organic guitar parts and a pulsating analogic sound. Is that a reflection of the greater focus on the Man (in the beginning of the travel which “OltreLuna” is) and the major analysis and inspection towards its figure that is now keeping the strict control over the Machines, avoiding the upset of the situation, on the contrary to what was happening in “U.M.A.”?

A- Davide: Yes there was more guitar-work in this album, and of course it can also be seen as a reflection of the Man that this time is a more central figure in the story, and has a more vivid importance in the global development.
It’s been favorable and positive the possibility to use analogic means for the production of guitars and bass, that in the final result fitted way better than with the digital ones, usually more cold and aseptic.
Anyway, to be really honest, this time I wanted from the start to have real amplifiers to reproduce the guitars: I like to vary and change. As well as I tried out new stylistic solutions in the music, I also like to have those changes in the production. In the future, I’d like to try other changements too in that sense: new sounds, new machines, maybe real drums played by a drummer, or using only analogic sythesizers and no VSTs, new collaborations… You know, many and varied factors that in the end create the uniqueness of a record. You only have to be bold enough to pick them, still keeping a strong overview on the work.
Anyhow, in “U.M.A.” there actually was a good guitar-work too, especially in tracks as “Sovrarobotizzazione” and “Droni”… But yes, its production gives them less spot there, and the same goes for the bass lines, on the exact contrary of the new record.

Q- And that’s why, compared to the possible expectations, the electronics in “OltreLuna” are only apparently diminished. In fact, as I guessed in the review, it got more sophisticated and it’s a deeply calculated choice aiming to both expand the facets of the project and in order to give more emphasis to the surprising tribal and ethnic influences. You were saying, Davide, that you started with the lyrical concept during the writing of the first track (the opener), but can you now focus on the compositive process? How has it channeled in this very direction?

A- Davide: Let’s say that the lyrics where suggested by what was taking shape from the construction of the first track, and then we started to perceive what we could have told in the album, very naturally. Then, clearly, everything has started to develop and expand further: we can notice how the album starts with songs having a more terrestrial aura and sound, with a more raw and punchy vibe, reaching afterwards those with a more spacey one, as well as we can notice how the timing of the tracks gets more and more wide as the album goes by, and how the kind of sounds and structures changes as the minutes of the record pass by; out of curiosity, the final and actual tracklist exactly reflects the order in which the tracks have been composed and finished, also. As you can see, everything fitted, to say it like that.
Concerning the different use of the electronics compared to “U.M.A.”… Since the debut was wrapped up, I already knew I’d have never done another record like this again. That one “Oltre” in the title [“Over” in Italian, -EdN] signifies also this: in my musical vision, I go ahead passing “Over” what I’ve previously done. I don’t regret anything, I’m satisfied with everything, but when I close a chapter and start focusing on the next one, I simply have to do something different in many ways. I know, many would have preferred “U.M.A. Part II”, I get it and in some ways I’m even grateful for that, but I can’t do something that doesn’t keep me satisfied, considering that when I do and I’ve done something, I tried my best to examinate it the most, already trying out many different solutions, creating songs that differed from each others as far as possibile. You know, that’s why I don’t have anything left to do on that very sound yet, on that very vision. And to say that, I’m not saying it’s not improvable in any way: I’m saying I personally don’t know how to improve it, made exception for some very little things. And to be honest, I let others do a full-record done by very little things.
That’s all about these changes in “OltreLuna”, that’s why as far as possibile every release by us will always be very different – still keeping the kind of trademark we reached with q[T]p.
I also think that somebody out there has been tricked off the fact there are not these synths overdubbed and overexposed in the mix now, that run over the listener overbearing him, thinking this way we’ve thrown them away. In fact, it’s not like that actually: if one listens it carefully, I also think that the elctronic work in “OltreLuna” is even a bit more sophisticated compared to the one in the debut, in some ways even more remarkable for its deeper research. All in all, I don’t regret nor I’d change “U.M.A.”. I think that sound, that mix is rather peculiar and its hallmarks surely brought us luck; but doing “U.M.A.” part II, III, IV… You know… Really boring. Nonetheless, I think many among our fans should have expected something new by me/us, since it’s no secret I’ve always wanted a project that it’s shapeshifting, as far as possible.
To be honest, many of the negative reactions have made me tought that I’m living up to my purposes, paradoxically.

Emanuele: Since the very first drafts of “[.Pianeta.Zero.]”, I knew in which direction the lyrics in “OltreLuna” should have gone. The choice of that kind of sonorities, once tied at the proper context of q[T]p, unavoidably recalls a curious yet particular, or unusual sci-fi imagery: new worlds for the human being, but with primeval customs and traditions, with rural but advanced settings, in some ways findable in many films, either modern ones and not. It’s from there that everything has started, then we developped the primal idea trying not to limit the main theme, trying to convey something that would have gone beyond what was expectable by those who already followed the project from the beginning, and so to make them part of an experience that focus way more on the fantasy of each person, including a larger quantity of visions.

Q- And it’s just on the ethnic influences that I want you to focus now. The tribal music from the South of the World and its kind of rhythms, with that dusty percussionism, it’s not a frequent choice in the Metal genre, unfortunately. But indeed these rhythms are a spot of interest in the electronics world, especially in some of the manifestations way far from yours: I’m thinking more to the eclectic Dark Ambient by Sephiroth or to some Trance music, rather than to the Psybient by Seahorse Transform, if you get what I mean. How has the idea come, of mixing these sonorities into q[T]p?

A- Davide: To be honest, I don’t know Sephiroth if not by chance… But now I’ll surely check it out. The tribal music it’s a passion of mine for a lot of years now. I can say that I love a lot of traditional music, of folklore, from the Japanese one to the most Northern ones, from the African tribal music, to the aborigines’ didge. And I love to hear it mixed in other context, obviously. So without mentioning well known acts, I always remember with pleasure this Black Metal band from Sri Lanka, named Funeral In Heaven, who included in their extreme music these traditional instruments from their land… And it was amazing.
During the years I composed various occasional demos (outside from Progenie Terrestre Pura), and I knew that sooner or later I’d have included this sounds also in this project; which better occasion if not this one?
To me, these sonorities perfectly describe the pure man, that primitive man so inherently tied to its fragile mortal status on the Mother Earth, so symbiotic with her, so respectful towarards the natural creatures: as above him, so below him. And either fascinated as well as frightened from all of this.
It was just a matter of time, to say the least, and so it was just seizing the day at the right moment.

Q- You’ve announced the line-up changes just a couple of weeks before the release of the new album, revealing those who took part in the recording of “OltreLuna”. Nonetheless, yet a few months after the release of “U.M.A.” (back in 2013), you were already speaking about its follow-up, publishing some pictures who depicted you already busy with the first recordings. Since then, 4 years passed and a breakthrough EP has come out: was it just long and complex the writing of the new full-length, or was the line-up change provoking the slowdowns?

A- Davide: Yes, I quite remember those pictures: I think I was recording a sax. Anyway, the proper line-up change happened last year, when I already started to write the embryo of “OltreLuna”, so the 4 years of waiting are not due to this. You know, after the release of “U.M.A.”, I immediately started to write several ideas for the new record, but at a certain point I wasn’t satisfied. It seemed to me that I wasn’t on the right way, so after a while I stopped on that. In the meanwhile, the idea of “Asteroidi”, the electronic EP, was born and so I spent my time on it, obviously, stepping aside the full-record. That was happening in the end of 2013 and the first half of 2014. In 2015, I tried to take care of the writings of the full record again, and I think there was a post on Facebook too, if I’m not wrong. But anyway, I don’t remember to be honest, because that was a period in which I didn’t remain focused on the music and on the project in general. So, as you noticed, we remained silent in the end, as we were without anything to say really.
I definitely and eventually unlocked the whole situation in April/May 2016, starting to compose “OltreLuna” (more or less blankly, even if I eventually used some ideas left in the closet) then without further interruptions.
So I’d say not, nothing to do with the line-up changes really in that sense, or long gestations (as commonly intended, at least). We can address to me that long waiting, because in the end I’m still the sole-composer of the project.

Q- And it’s exaclty about “Asteroidi” that I want to speak now. How should it be seen in your whole artistic framework? As a watershed between the full-records, pure digression from the experimental approach of the full-lengths or a proper take of time due to the situation you described now? I’ll be honest, I found it curious years ago because to me it was conceptually assimilable to an episode like “La Terra Rossa Di Marte” from the debut in terms of expression (notwhitstanding it’s totally electronic indeed). Without further ado, I didn’t feel it as the evolution that you always described as an ultimate aim of the project. And let me tell you… The curiosity grew on me even more, after listening to “OltreLuna”

A- Davide: Absolutely not taking time, it was just something we wanted to do for various reasons, on which we put time and money, and to be completely honest I’m more than satisfied with “Asteroidi”, I listen to it way more than “U.M.A.”… And all in all even more gladly.
It’s a work that was willing to complete this firt phase of the project, to say it like that, in order to pay homage to that electronic music which has given us a lot, and to test ourselves in that. You know, I knew from the start that many would have not undertsand it, and that’s fine: Progenie Terrestre Pura it’s in the end a Metal project, and many into this are not that fond of some electronic music, but as far as concerns me, it also clarify our versatility and our vision. I see the EPs as a particular moment of further experimentation, made in order to try some of these solutions that maybe would not fit in an entire full-length by q[T]p. Those records follow a major-idea, something that makes me say “Ok that’s perfect” or “No, that’s cool BUT maybe it’s not for our imagery in its entirety”.
“Asteroidi”, for that reason, it’s a work that only inquires and shows our Electronic/Ambient part, which is essential for the project but that cannot stand alone in a full-length, since I consider them as the real moments in which we show ourselves in our final cut, the very original one, contrarily to the special cut of our spin-offs (that’s to say the EPs, of course).
So it’s rather regular that you don’t see “Asteroidi” as an evolution of ours, because it is not in the very proper sense of term. I prefer to keep the evolution that is a pillar for the project (or to say it in this way, the change) for the only full-lengths, while in the EPs I take a break with some digressions always in theme with the project: obviously I’ll never make a record similar to Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore, I’d better change name first.
In the next EP, probably, I’ll mostly clarify this fact as soon as you’ll hear to its music..

Q- You know, in this way you excite curiosity…

A- Davide: I think it will come out as a 30-minutes-something and it will be based on a concept I’ve written. It will be a short story and it will also be a piece of work in which you’ll see a darker side of q[T]p, more aggressive if you want, with sheet recalling both the more traditional Black Metal style, tight and raw, as well as a certain darkness near to the Industrial and Dark Ambient worlds… That’s because the concept I wrote it’s a story that wants to pay hommage to these horror sci-fi moods (who’s saying “Alien”?) which are a bit Lovecraftians also. Recently, I read a comic novel by Grant Harrison that reminded me a lot of my very own story: it’s entitled “Nameless” and its published in Italy by Saldapress.
Yes, the EPs are a good amusement park
.

Q- Yeah, the spin-off or digression for the EPs was the most accurate vision to me also, from the moment “Asteroidi” it’s only expressing one of your sides, without going any “further”. After the EP parenthesis, let’s change a bit topic: I noticed that in the title-track it’s used a verse by Pascoli [from “Il Bolide”, -EdN]. Is there any other direct referring to poets and writers who are outsiders for the sci-fi panorama as commonly intended, which we can have missed either today or in the past?

A- Davide: That quote is Emanuele’s work, and as soon as I read it I couldn’t help but to observe how much it was suitable, right and wonderful. There are quite a bunch of other references / tributes in “OltreLuna” and we wrote them in the booklet of the CDs, so we can let you read them directly from there. From “U.M.A.”, there was the clear tribute to Yann Souetre and his “Remain Silent, Man, Machines, Souls”.

Emanuele: That reference is the only one from a poet you’ll find in the whole “OltreLuna”. The text is as you said taken from a poem that for Pascoli represented more the “cupio dissolvi”, the unquenchable sorrow of the loss, than the travel on the edge of the Universe as the one in which the reference has been now included. Anyway, my (way more hackneyed) interpretation reflects the whole meaning of the record, as well as our insignificant presence in a limitless cosmic sea of stars such as this. All the cosmic poetry is a vast source of inspiration for the genre which we play indeed: it’s through this, that the individual, the Man, comprehends and mostrly expresses the real human condition, alluring to images and situations otherwise unthinkable.
As a result of this, it’s not excluded in any way that other references like this will be included in future releases
.

Q- So let’s step back in the past for a while: “espansione o introspezione, uomini che scrutano l’infinito aspettando la supernova”. The extreme scientific research has to be translated as introspective analysis of the human being. It’s a topic that makes me think about several sci-fi books of course, but also a lot of films in the vein of the introspective science fiction kind, “Solaris” and “Moon” just to name a few. In the beginning of the interview, Davide referred to the “Bicentennial Man” by Asimov, then we came across “Alien”, Yann Souetre, Grant Harrison, yet again now we talked a bit about Pascoli’s poetry. So… It seems to me that behind q[T]p lurks (not even secretly) a literary world, and a cinematographic one, way larger than what we can fathom just listening to the music or by the imagery of the project…

A- Davide: When we started q[T]p, both me and Nex[1] were huge fans of Asimov and of course we loved similar writers as Pohl (“Man Plus”), Clarke, Dick, some things by Sterling… Personally, during the last years I’ve lost a bit the habitude of reading books, unfortunately, but I’ve recently discovered again the passion for the drawing and so, as a greedy neophyte as I am, I’ve started stocking up lots of comics and mangas. Not so long ago I’ve read that amazingly absurd volume which “Nameless” by Harrison is. Yes, the one I was referring before. I’m certainly not a conoisseur (as I can maybe be in music for example), not of books, nor of comics or cinema, I’m rather more a simple discoverer. That’s why I frequently go to search and find out what people is doing. Nowadays you can just click on Deviantart to find incredible artists, and on YouTube also, you’ll find “amateurs” that are creating mindblowing mini-films. To me all of this is fantastic and challenging. So yeah, behind q[T]p there is without the shadow of a doubt someone who’s a lover of various kinds of arts, even if I’d not say that much “addicted” really.

Q- And tell me… In the booklet, is the illustration for “[.Deus.Est.Machina.]” a mention to Kubrick?

A- Davide: Not really! Not volountarily, at least… I like his work but not. What recalled it to you?

Q- Quite easy really… What I immediately thought was to an overlap of the Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci and the infamous Hal 9000 frame from “2001: A Space Odissey” (mainly used as the artwork for both the poster and various DVD editions)… I’m not lying if I tell you that the combination excited a bit of curiosity in me… But it seems to be involuntary!

A- Davide: Yeah, for sure it’s a picture that recalls both of them… But to be honest it was not calculated!

The artwork for “[.Deus.Est.Machina.]” (frame on the left) and a still of Hal 9000 (frame on the right).
Q- Sometimes the listeners let the imagination flow a bit too much! Let’s change the topic: from which instrument did you begin with your personal formation? Was there a proper spark that gave birth to the thought of merging in this way the Black Metal world to this kind of electronics?

A- Davide: Well, I’d say it’s good like that and it’s unavoidable! I’m speaking first of all as the listener that I am, I’m keen to in travelling with the mind about the CDs that I love; they have to unleash strong emotions, and those can also lead way far with the thought, and that’s fine.
Anyway, I started as a guitarist. During 2007 or so, I decided I had to record music written by me, that was my vocation (to say it like that) in music. For a couple of years I learnt between the tricks of the home-recordings, and let me tell you that ten years ago everything was far different from today, way more difficult and there were a lot of resources less. So I produced a lot of amateurish-demos expanding the genres I was listening to (I can remember a lot of Ambient and mostly Dark Ambient in the vein of the Cold Meat Industry acts). That was happening before I met Nex[1] in 2009, thanks to him I definitely discovered the Psybient / Goa / IDM / and so on worlds… Genres that at the time I was listening a lot less than nowadays. At the end of that year Progenie Terrestre Pura were born, and the idea of fusing Black Metal to that kind of music, with those themes… I don’t know, I think it appeared both much natural and very unexpected to think about that now. The pseudonymous track, which also was the first one, was composed at the first try and in a very short time everything was working perfectly. So for us it was then very natural to use it as a blueprint for our Black Metal to convey those kind of themes… And I’d say the formula worked out. So I don’t think there was a proper spark, one day we simply said: “Ehy! Black Metal is great and Psybient is great too, why not to mix them and to do something that could ben our own?”. Something like that, I guess. And we actually did it.

Q- And you’ve succeded, too. About that, I know that Progenie Terrestre Pura (and to say that, I’m referring to the first eponymous track) were born mixing the passion for Wolves In The Throne Room and Darkspace (I guess among the others) with Carbon Based Lifeforms and maybe Autechre (among the hypothetical others). But do you need to mention someone else in particuale today for the actual realization of “OltreLuna”? In a couple of answers ago you predicted me, referring to the special thanks in the booklet: what can you tell me on this matter about Artificial Kid e S.U.N. Project?

A- Davide: Yeah, it’s no secret that the first eponymous track was born merging WITTR and Darkspace, for what  was concerning the Black Metal part… These were the actual referrings I had at the time, I remember it very clearly, whereas the electronic stuff was some Psybient more in general. Then everything progressed influence by influence as I said: I remember that for “Sinapsi Divelte”, the second track, I had in mind Enslaved (“Axioma Ethica Odini” period).
Anyway, I can’t tell you the same with “OltreLuna”… More in general, for everything I compose nowadays, I get the inspiration from sensations and visions that I have and I want to put into form of music, without having this or that other artist in mind specificately. Yet it’s clear that you’re (more or less) always debtor to someone, even if indirectly and in different measure, but I can’t tell you anymore the artists I had in mind when I wrote “OltreLuna”. Maybe, listening to it again in a while, I could mention someone actually, but at the moment I can’t tell.
Concerning Artificial Kid, S.U.N. Project and Pascoli, the thing is a bit different and we have expressed gratitude to them in the booklet of the CDs in form of a “tribute”. Why? S.U.N. Project because I’ve sampled a bit of a sound (a couple of seconds really) from their “Macrophage” record, so the thanks were required. I’ve also mentioned Artificial Kid because they’ve inspired me for a metric of a lyric I’ve written for “OltreLuna”, which seems to me to be copied from them. Pascoli, of course, has been taken as a whole with his verses. Everyone of them is an artist that I love for its own work. I personally worship “Numero 47” by Artificial Kid, to me is one of the best records which Italy has given birth to. A total masterpiece.

Q- Speaking about stuff from our beloved country, it’s no secret the other two new members [Emanuele Prandoni and Fabrizio Sanna, -EdN] are parts of other projects as Anamnesi and Simulacro. Have you also other projects that we may not be aware of, totally outside q[T]p?

A- Davide: I really hope to publish something of mine other than q[T]p sooner or later… I also was near to do it a couple of times in the past, but as of today nothing has been finalized yet due to lack of time, sometimes also lack of will or inspiration. So, at the moment, I’ve got nothing to reveal except for Progenie Terrestre Pura unfortunately…

Q- So hoping to hear something from you on these unknown fronts, in the meanwhile we salute you and wish the best with Progenie Terrestre Pura. Thank you very much for opening us and the readers a vast breach into the world of q[T]p, we now let you have this safe space to tell everything you may feel has remained untouched in the interview.

A- Davide: Thank you for the space you left us and for the nice chat. I can’t but close saying a big “thank you all” for the huge support we received for “OltreLuna”, it really means a lot. I think you’ll not wait that much in order to hear something new from us… And the ones who’ve bought the limited box can already guess what I’m talking about! Thanks again folks.
