L’unione di forze tra i nostrani Selvans e gli argentini Downfall Of Nur, rispettivamente autori degli apprezzatissimi “Lupercalia” e “Umbras De Barbagia” usciti solamente lo scorso anno, non poteva che destare diverse attenzioni grazie al loro misterioso album collaborativo in uscita il prossimo 7 novembre tramite Avantgarde Music. Tra le attenzioni suscitate vi è ovviamente quella della vostra Webzine preferita che ha deciso, in comune accordo con i due mastermind delle formazioni, di riservare all’ambizioso progetto un’esclusiva intervista corale (coerentemente con come è stata descritta l’opera) interamente incetrata sull’uscita e la sua realizzazione. Le fitte ombre che avvolgono “Selvans / Downfall Of Nur” non sono ancora state completamente dipanate, ma per saperne di più su cosa vi attenderà nel disco non vi resta che intraprendere la lettura…

Q- First of all, welcome Antonio and welcome back Selvans Haruspex. Since the interview is focused on your “Selvans / Downfall Of Nur” album in its entirety, let’s start directly from that: you’re label mates, so we were wondering if the idea has originally come from Avantgarde Music or rather if it has matured among you first. How has the collaboration born from its very beginning?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: There isn’t any specific reason behind the beginning of our collaboration… We got in touch one year ago, after having discovered that we were label mates. We have begun to talk and after a while the idea of doing something together came easily.
In January we started to plan our work and we immediately agreed on the fact that we didn’t want to release a collection of stuff put together without a reason, and this was the way we proposed our project to Avantgarde Music.
Q- Which ones do you consider to be the common elements between Selvans and Downfall Of Nur, composition-wise and also conceptual-wise, that have enabled such a project?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Surely the lyrical themes and the way in which Selvans and Downfall Of Nur face them, the use of ‘ethnic’ instruments and the atmosphere that they create and, last but not least, a total lack of interest for the ‘limits’ that someone would like to impose to this musical genre.
Q- The album’s concept is based on the dualism between Sun and Moon, as it was conceived in the past eras, but I suppose it will be not restricted to a single view. How do you actually came to the choice of this theme and what do you want to reveal about it?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Basing on the previous answer and as we have said on the only statement that you’ll read about this release, we consider our projects as two faces of the same medal and we could say the same about the Sun and the Moon for the many interpretations of their dualism along the ages.
We succeeded in impressing the identity of Selvans and Downfall Of Nur in the two figures (or divinities), singing about them. We don’t remember from what everything has started, it has been something that we have felt and realized.
Q- From the very beginning you’ve described the collaboration as “not a mere split-album”, but something more indeed. Then you’ve added that every track is four-hands composed by you two especially for this release. By the way, I can notice from the tracklist that one song is credited to Selvans and one to Downfall Of Nur. All in all, what we’ll eventually find out?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: There’s a concept that could be reasumed in a long celebration of the two stars that starts in the morning when the Earth rises, and it finishes when the last cicada stops to sing, to start again the morning after.
It is a cycle.
It’s something different from a simple split-album because there’s a unique production and, even if we wanted to identify Selvans with the solar side and Downfall Of Nur with the lunar one, there is no clear difference between the two parts… We insisted it to join our projects in a choral opus but we didn’t want to deny the individual identities built until now.
Q- How has the composing process come through from its beginning to its very end?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: From the very first demos we talked about every single point of the composition, exchanging point of views and stuff continuously.
Sometimes we have ‘stratified’ the work in order to participate in what the other was writing, despite the impossibility to be side by side during each phase of the composition. This attitude has created a sort of ‘mix’ between our musical styles and you will easily notice it on the four-hands written parts, but we think that it will be a recurrent feeling during the entire listening.
Q- If we have to count all the languages used by either Selvans and Downfall Of Nur, we’ll probably need more than one hand fingers to cover them all. Which languages will we find for the lyrics of this album?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: In this opus we used only English and Latin.
Q- Downfall Of Nur doesn’t play live, but the gears of Selvans live-machine are well oiled and you have a really busy stage activity in both Italy and abroad. Will we listen to some material of the collaboration album during the next shows or, keeping in mind its nature, these are only meant to stay on the record?

Q- Innanzitutto, bentornato sulle nostre pagine Selvans Haruspex e benvenuto Antonio. Visto che l’intervista è totalmente incentrata sul vostro album, “Selvans / Downfall Of Nur”, direi di cominciare senza preamboli. Siete compagni di label, ci siamo quindi chiesti se l’idea non sia stata originariamente proposta da Avantgarde Music o se invece matura da vostri particolari motivi. Come è nata dal principio la collaborazione?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Nessun motivo particolare, siamo entrati in contatto un anno fa, dopo esserci scoperti compagni di label grazie ai nostri due album, abbiamo iniziato a parlare e dopo un po’ di tempo è venuta fuori l’idea di fare qualcosa insieme.
A Gennaio iniziammo a pianificare questa collaborazione e fummo subito d’accordo sul fatto che non dovesse essere una raccolta di materiale messo insieme a forza e fu innanzitutto così che la proponemmo alla nostra label.
Q- Quali pensate siano gli elementi in comune, sia dal punto di vista compositivo che concettuale, fra le vostre band, che hanno consentito il realizzarsi di un progetto simile?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Oltre le tematiche già di per sé affini, sicuramente il modo in cui vengono trattate in Selvans e Downfall Of Nur, l’uso di strumenti ‘etnici’ e quindi l’atmosfera che essi creano e, ultimo ma più importante, un totale disinteresse per i ‘limiti’ che alcuni vorrebbero imposti dal genere che suoniamo.
Q- Il concept indicato è il dualismo Sole-Luna nella concezione antica, ma suppongo non si limiti ad una sola interpretazione. Come siete giunti alla scelta del tema e cosa vi sentite di rivelare al riguardo?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Sulla base della risposta precedente e come detto nell’unico comunicato che leggerete riguardo questa release, consideriamo i nostri due progetti come facce diverse della stessa medaglia. Si può dire lo stesso del Sole e della Luna o delle molteplici interpretazioni del loro dualismo nei secoli. Abbiamo fatto sì che l’identità di Selvans e Downfall Of Nur si infondesse totalmente nelle due figure (o divinità), cantandole.
Non ricordiamo da dove sia partito tutto, è stato qualcosa che abbiamo sentito e lo abbiamo realizzato.
Q- Fin dai primissimi annunci l’avete descritto come “non un semplice split-album”. Avete anche aggiunto che ogni pezzo è composto a quattro mani appositamente per la release. Tuttavia, noto dalla tracklist che un brano è stato attribuito a Selvans ed uno a Downfall Of Nur. Cosa andremo a trovare nella pratica?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: C’è un concept, se così vogliamo chiamarlo, che potrebbe essere riassunto in una lunga celebrazione dei due Astri che inizia al mattino quando la terra si desta e termina quando l’ultima cicala smette di cantare per poi ricominciare da capo, il tutto può essere inteso come un ciclo.
È qualcosa di diverso da un semplice split-album poiché la produzione è unica, e nonostante l’aver voluto identificare Selvans con il lato ‘solare’ e Downfall Of Nur con quello ‘lunare’ non c’è una linea netta che divida le due parti, abbiamo preteso che i nostri due progetti si riunissero in un’opera corale ma senza rinnegare l’identità costruita fino a questo momento.
Q- Come è avvenuto il processo compositivo dal suo principio fino alla sua realizzazione finale?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: Dalle primissime bozze ci siamo confrontati su ogni singolo aspetto della composizione, scambiandoci pareri e materiale in continuazione.
In alcuni momenti abbiamo ‘stratificato’ il lavoro in modo da poter intervenire in prima persona su ciò che scriveva l’altro, nonostante l’impossibilità di essere fianco a fianco durante le singole fasi, questo ha creato una sorta di ‘fusione’ tra i nostri stili musicali che sarà possibile notare facilmente nelle parti composte a quattro mani, ma pensiamo sia una sensazione ricorrente durante l’ascolto dell’intero album.
Q- Se contiamo gli idiomi (e dialetti) utilizzati singolarmente dai due progetti nelle varie uscite forse non bastano le dita di una mano. Che lingue troveremo nelle liriche dell’album collaborativo?
A- Selvans Haruspex & Antonio: In questa opera ci siamo limitati unicamente all’Inglese e al latino.
Q- I Downfall Of Nur non suonano live per il momento, tuttavia l’agenda dei Selvans è ricca di appuntamenti per quella che ormai si può definire una formazione live rodata ed internazionale. Sentiremo dal vivo materiale dall’album collaborativo da parte vostra, o i brani rimarranno esclusivamente sul disco?
